After turning in his fourth late assignment, Sam is sent to his university’s counsellor who delves into his life. Struggling to focus and sit still, Sam reveals how his practical skills were neglected by his parents, pushing him into theoretical subjects he can’t excel in. The counsellor suspects ADHD and probes further, discovering Sam’s view of it as an irritating “shadow”; a loud, brightly-dressed version of himself who never leaves him alone. She then has Sam recount the day when the “Shadow” led him through London, prioritising trivial tasks over his assignment, eventually leading him to not hand it in on time.

Shadow represents Sam's ADHD, embodying characteristics of distraction and impulsivity. He constantly accompanies Sam, dressed in vibrant clothing and demanding attention, often leading Sam astray from important tasks.
Dr. Miller, a counsellor at the fictional University of Lewisham, exudes warmth and compassion, defying the typical image of a university counsellor. Throughout her career, she has encountered numerous young individuals facing challenges similar to Sam's. However, Sam stands out as the first to articulate and personify his neurodiversity.
